So it was another COLD, WET weekend at the ole’ campground again this past weekend. 😦 Friday it was almost like a ghost town around there…very few campers! Our usual Friday night dinner fare of roasted hotdogs over a blazing campfire was cancelled due to soggy ground surrounding the fire pit. So four of us headed to Dave’s All American Pizza on US36 on west side of Danville, IN. Quite a unique patriotic decor of military memorabilia. The food was pretty good, most of us had the salad bar, the prices were fair. We have driven past many times but this was our first dining experience. I am sure over the course of the camping season, we will probably dine there again.
There was definitely more life around the campground on Saturday. We had our first monthly campground meeting at 10am Saturday morning. We had a pretty good turnout, hopefully it’s a new trend and not because it was the “first one”. Our elected President, Ron Riggen, had to step down to Vice President due to his election to the Heritage Lake POA Board. He could not retain his President position and be on the HLPOA board. That, in turn, moved the Vice President, Dave Fry, to the President’s position. Soooo the gavel was passed! The meeting was pretty uneventful until we reached the topic of expired gambling license. For those of you not at the meeting, we are no longer able to do 50/50, pull tabs, bingo, etc., so our fundraising ability has pretty much come to a quick halt. We’re not sure if the license will be renewed or what grandiose fundraising ideas we can come up with. We welcome fundraising ideas, keeping in mind camper participation can be scarce. Stay tuned for updates as we know it.
Saturday actually turned out pretty nice considering all the storms we’ve had recently! Our campground event calendar offered up a ham & beans dinner at 7pm in the Shelter House. Even though we didn’t have a big turnout, we had a delicious dinner! I would like to thank the Clements, the Woods, the Riggens, & the Gates that joined us (the Frys) for their contributions and in participating! We managed to raise $16…woohoo! I’m sure everyone in attendance took a little something home with them…GAS! teehee ;-P
Thanks for tuning in folks….until my next post…be safe, be healthy…& come on BETTER WEATHER!!!
It was great to see a lot of fellow campers this past weekend for the opening of the 2013 camping season! It was pretty populated for being the first weekend open. A lot of the campers used the weekend for just bringing their units in and getting them set-up. Others already had them set up and were there to enjoy the socialization of the camp season! Unfortunately the water softeners weren’t serviced in time for the opening weekend. But I am told that they will be operational by Thursday (11th)!
We pulled in about 2pm on Friday afternoon…there were a number of campers already there and many more to follow yet that day and still more on Saturday. Lots of busy people working on the units, their lots, their socializing…lol. We had scheduled a “Welcome Back Campers” Family Movie Night in the Shelter House for Saturday night. We only got about eight takers. I decided to show “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” starring Dustin Hoffman as Mr. Magorium, Natalie Portman as Molly Mahoney, Jason Bateman as Henry “Mutant” Weston & an enjoyable young boy named Zach Mills playing Eric Applebaum. If you have never seen the movie, I highly recommend it. It’s a great movie for the young and the young at heart! I’ve watched it several times! We only had to battle the pesky wind and the very cool temperatures. Viewers retreated to their warm campers seeking shelter from the winds after the movie ended.
In closing, I will be posting an ingredient contribution sign up sheet in the Shelter House Friday (12th) for the Ham & Beans Dinner scheduled for 7pm-? Saturday April 20th. Tickets are $1 ea. for 10yrs & up. Please bring all your table settings and drinks you will need for your family. Again, look for that ingredient contribution sign up sheet to be posted in the Shelter House this Friday (12th). Hope everyone has a great week with all this warmer weather before we turn COLD again… 😦
…we’re looking for adventure….for whatever comes our way! Born to be w-i-l-d. Yes it’s almost that time! Officially the 2013 Heritage Lake Camping Season begins on April 5th at 1PM. I’m excited for the fun to begin! But with the crap Mother Nature has been dealing us as of lately…one can only hope that winter hits the road & we can start to enjoy better weather! If you remember, last year it was unseasonably warmer than it should have been for this time of year. Sadly though we really never had a spring last year, it skipped practically from winter to summer. But, this year I just want the cold, snowy, windy weather to take a hike & for it to just be comfortable enough to enjoy the amenities at the start of camping season….how about you?
That being said, it was decided that turning on the water in the campgrounds should be delayed a little longer to make sure we didn’t have any mishaps with frozen, burst pipes in the campground. We sure don’t want to waste a bunch of money having to do unnecessary plumbing, let alone cutting into our camping season by delaying the “opening day”!!!
We are fortune to have Barb Woods return for another season as the Campground Manager, along with her equally hardworking other half…Ed. Unfortunately for them, they have been unable to stay in their camper yet, due to the delay of turning on the water. Not so sure these seasonal Floridians favored the weather they returned to…makes a body wonder…why trade that weather for this? But we’re certainly glad they did!
REMINDER: We’re having a “Welcome Back” family movie night & campfire at the shelter house starting at 8PM on Saturday night (April 6th). We’ll have the wood stove all stoked up & blazing. So bring your snacks, beverages of choice, comfy chairs, & probably warm blankets for the kick off of the 2013 Camping Season. If there’s enough campers, we might even run our first 50-50 drawing. We’ll see you there!
